What Does GSM Mean for Promotional Note Paper?

GSM refers to the term “Grams per Square Metre”. As a buyer of sticky notes or notepads, this is essential as it helps you determine which type of paper thickness works best for you. A slight difference between GSM can make a large difference, so we’ve provided a quick comparison as to how to choose the right GSM between sticky notes and notepads. We’ve also added an additional section to compare between heavier and lighter GSM.

Promotional Notepaper GSM

Premium Lightweight Notepads

Our notepads come at 70 GSM. This level of GSM sits in the sweet spot between thin paper and more general household paper. Its lightweight design makes it ideal for notepads whilst still retaining a solid piece of note-taking paper. It also means you can fit more pages in your notepad!

Durable Custom Sticky Notes

Our sticky notes are slightly higher than our notepads at 80 GSM. The extra difference is to account for the utility of sticky notes, ie. being attached to various surfaces. It is necessary to have an adaptable piece of paper that is also weighty enough to act as a great piece of writing material.

Comparison Between GSM Levels

As a comparison for our sticky notes and notepads, here are some examples of other GSM levels to help you get a feel as to how our products fit in these categories:

  • 35 GSM – extremely thin paper, such as in newspapers;
  • 100 GSM – household paper, such as printer paper;
  • 140 GSM – poster paper, ideal to withstand wear and tear;
  • 300 GSM – outdoor flyers, suited to weather conditions;
  • 400 GSM – premium cardboard, utilised in business cards.

We often get asked about how best to design adhesive notes for marketing campaigns and events. While all clients will have different needs and requirements, here are a few pointers for standard custom notes that we think are helpful.

Always Leave Space to Write

It is essential to remember that at the end of the day, most people will use sticky notes as a means for jotting down reminders to themselves and other important details. Why is this important? Because it impacts the design, you will ultimately choose for your custom branded adhesive notes. It might be tempting to put a huge logo on your page that takes up a lot of space - it definitely will get noticed! However, if your recipients cannot use the paper for comfortable jotting, then they likely won't use it at all. If having a large symbol or logo is important to you, consider a light colour that can be written over instead of a very dark, clear one.

Remember, Recycled Paper Isn't Bright White

We all like doing the right thing when it comes to the environment, which is why an increasing number of our customers are choosing eco-friendly recycled sticky notes over the standard bleached paper style. It is worth remembering, however, that if you opt for the recycled paper, it will not be a bleached, bright white colour which can impact how vibrant your overall design will look. For most people, this isn't an issue, and frankly, the difference is subtle -- but if exact colour matching is essential to your corporate look this is one to keep in mind!

Pick a Note Size Based on Recipient Needs

Are you distributing your promotional adhesive notes at a conference and want your recipients to use them to jot down notes? Then you might actually be in need for an A5 Custom Notepad or A4 Promo Notepaper instead. Similarly, if you're looking to slip a tiny gift with your logo on it into an expo bag, you're probably looking for a 75x75mm sticky note pad. Consider the event or campaign you will be distributing your sticky notes at and how you think your recipients will want to use them, then discuss with our sales team the variety of options available to meet these requirements. Don't work the other way around ("I'm going to buy an A4 notepad and who cares if the event doesn't have bags for the recipients to put them in!") because it could lead to an ignored or unloved product.
